I think we can make it

It's going to be a looong week or three until I get this semester done. I have homework of my own that needs doing and it's not getting done. I had a little access disaster last night and the assignment that 's due by midnight tonight will not be there on time. The photoshop project that's due Monday will likely suck unless I can figure out a way to spend the whole weekend on it, also unlikely.

Macbeth is giving me fits. I'm looking for a lightweight way to explore it textually with my students and that's not coming to fruition. I'm relying on the old adage, "Nothing clears away the neuroses like a deadline." But even that is failing me.

Work is more tense than ever, the boss didn't come in yesterday until after 3, and by that time we were all done and standing around talking. She's made herself irrelevant and now that she's heard the rumor that she's on a hitlist by the new administration she's sweating it. Understandably, but she's exactly the kind of target they're looking for right now. Well paid, not performing to potential, and close to retirement. I have this feeling that she's looking at a summer retirement THIS year instead of 2011 like she has planned. I'm sure that will hurt her financially, but in the end she'll be so much better off. It's so hard on her to keep up with this job with all her health issues. I have to wonder what that means to the rest of us when she does depart.

But North Carolina bigots are still watching 20/20 and believing every word without any research on their own. (Which you'd think she'd have a staff to do) and thereby proclaiming that Matthew Shepard being a fag had Absolutely Nothing to do with why he was targeted and crucified. And Egyptians are still killing pigs to prevent the "swine flu," and Barack Obama has still not made good on ANY of his campaign promises to us.

So the world still makes sense I guess.

it's raining cats and dogs and I need a morsel, and since I found a picture with my two favorite things yesterday, men and books, I thought I'd share the sweetest photo I think I've seen in a very long time:

It's just a prefect day to stay indoors and do a little smooching in the stacks.

And the Christians resume their duties

I see there was no shortage of hate-filled Christians out there in Iowa yesterday. I particularly loved the county i which someone handed in a petition requesting the County Recorder's refuse to give same-sex couples the form to get a license. There were 8 signatures on it. All good God-fearing Christians I'm certain of it

Gotta be sure to keep everyone else from getting what you already have. Gotta be sure to prevent the notion that civil rights are for everyone from growing into a national movement. Gotta get out there and make sure others are hating too!

I doubt I'll ever understand it. The very people who represent these organizations that preach love and forgiveness are at the forefront of almost all the hate in this world.

When, do you suppose, will we wake up and realize that the problem isn't with people, it's with their God!

Wasn't it Lura Nyro who sang the song, "I'm not afraid of your Yahweh, I'm afraid of what you do in the name of your God."

Update: I just had to come back and add this little tidbit. I was reading storied about people in Iowa submitting their signatures on petitions protesting gay marriage, and one of them was Chris Wolfe...whose sister was one of the first in the state to marry under the new law yesterday. The following is a quote from the loving and Christian (I'm certain) Chris.

"As for his relationship with his sister going forward, Wolfe said, “I love her, but she’s dragging her name, her family’s name and the state of Iowa through the sewer.”

Ain't he a wonderful brother to have?

How can you be allowed to raise children and teach them to hate? How can you be allowed to...well...run the world and spew as much hate as you do?

It begs the question; How do you sleep at night?

I can only keep on keepin' on, and hope that something will happen to make you all come to your senses.

And precluding that, that you're the heterosexual General Motors.

Even God knows their day has come.

But in the meantime I'll appease with a morsel:

Upupdate: I just found this on Salon.com. The universe was listening today:

April 28, 2009 | Here is how British literary critic Terry Eagleton begins his brisk, funny and challenging new book: "Religion has wrought untold misery in human affairs. For the most part, it has been a squalid tale of bigotry, superstition, wishful thinking, and oppressive ideology." That's quite a start, especially when you consider that the point of Eagleton's "Reason, Faith, and Revolution: Reflections on the God Debate" -- adapted from a series of lectures he delivered at Yale in April 2008 -- is to defend the theory and practice of religion against its most ardent contemporary critics.

Monday

I'm getting a little worn out with this semester. But three more weeks and I'm free. At least for the summer.

The weekend was interesting. I'm thinking I need to move on from the stables wher I volunteer. No problems or anything like that, well that's not entirely true, I went out to work with a horse I wanted to take on as a project and was told not to work with them anymore. It appears that this guy doesn't understand certain procedures and judges them by their immediate effect. If they don't produce results that day he's no longer interested. AND they are his horses after all. I will say I wasn't crazy when he told that I was too soft on the horse I'd been working with and that since the horse wouldn't stand still for shoeing last week he just kicked him in the stomach until he did. But, again, they're his horses, he just let's me play with them and he gets to set he rules. And though i understand that you have to be a bit forceful sometimes when dealing with a 1100 pound animal, I'm not sure kicking them in the stomach until they comply is the way to go.

But my issues actually revert to where I was 18 months ago. I'M NOT LEARNING ANYTHING!!!!

I want to know how to handle them,I want to learn how to at least do a little training, and I want to have the confidence to get on a horse and ride. The biggest problem I have with these horses is that they're barely under control. Sometimes you have to really MAKE them do what you want. And frankly that's a little more danger than this old man is interested in anymore. I want to ride a horse and feel safe dong so. I understand that it'll never be like getting into a Volvo,(before ford) but it's gotta be safer than it is out at the current place.

In that perfect world in my head, I'd be able to start taking lessons elsewhere and still be able to ride at the old place. But in the end it may not be something I can make happen. I may actually need to move on in order to progress. They've been good to me, but they've gotten fair value, and I doubt there'd be any hard feelings if I left.

But other than that I laid around the house feeling allergy-ridden all weekend.

I had a most wonderful encounter at the grocery yesterday though. You see there's this guy...

He's salt and pepper on top, and silver around the sides and I think he's kinda cute, (though prior to today I can't say I'd noticed those arms)

But after he'd paid for his groceries and I'm sure seen me checking him out mercilessly, he winked at me.

Now, I haven't been winked at in an age, so this was pretty cool in my estimation. At any rate it certainly made my day.

I planted stuff on Saturday, Tomatoes and herbs. Next weekend I'm getting a couple of flowering plants for the deck and then I have to call it quits in the planting dept. There's simply no room on that deck for anymore.

Saturday afternoon I watched a hallmark movie with Ed Asner and Jason London. I hadn't seen him in a long time, and he was still a cutie. So I went online to request some pictures of him from this website I know and lo and behold, within 2 hours there were some lovely pictures, and more than I had imagined.

So I'm sharing Jason London as today's morsel:

His identical twin brother ain't no slouch either.

Hot Guy Friday and the Monsoons have arrived

Apparently it's monsoon season here in the heartland. It's supposed to rain a LOT the next 6 days. Very unhappy about that.

I did get cabin fever yesterday and went outside to play. The ride turned into a walk because of the flat tire. I cannot understand why I can't get tires and tubes that can't hit a little bump, and I mean little. That aluminum frame would have jarred me senseless if it had been a big one. So today I have to get that fixed. sadly no time to ride because of it,and I'm afraid it'll be the last possibility for a while.

However, there is solace in Hot Guy Friday.

Enjoy loves:

Thursday and it's RAINING!!!

I'd be a lot more circumspect about this rain if it weren't so close to the weekend and messing up my ability to ride Saturday and Sunday. I simply cannot believe it.

It's supposed to clear off soon and be nice later in the day. I hope so, because I had a great time riding the bike yesterday and I'm chafing at the bit to get out there again today.

I made some pots yesterday, so I'm increasing the inventory to take to the school for firing soon. I have to get them in there so he can get them fired and I can glaze before the semester is over. We have three more weeks, but I have no idea how much he still has to do over and above mine. But I'll have stuff to sell at fairs this year which is what I want.

Toying with the idea of a trip over my birthday. There are so many great airfare sales I don't think I can pass them up. Besides, if I'm unemployed as of July 1, vacating may be a thing of the past for a while.

A morsel for your Thursday:

Earth Day!

Get out and plant something today. A tree, a vegetable garden, or just a tomato plant. Some flowers would be lovely later this spring. I'm making light of it but it's true, you should be thinking about this stuff.

Sunday I went out and bought all my herbs for the season and a couple of container tomato plants as well. Then I really got the bug and bought some seed to plant around the bases of the trees in front of my office. It truly looks like hell during the summer here in the ghetto when there is NO green space to look at, and when your own workplace looks like a place Herman Munster would work. So I went downtown to work on Sunday morning when I knew no one was there so I could plant these seeds without detection. If they sprout it'll be a pleasant surprise. If they don't I'll be the only one disappointed. But I think they will, I bought easy stuff, like marigolds. They can be ignored and they'll be fine around here.

In further pursuit of earth day/week, whatever, I went home with the herbs and made some pots to put them in. Now all I have to do is glaze them and I'm good to go for the year. Well, not entirely, I have to make a decision about flowering plants. Last year I made a little privacy hedge on my balcony with Hibiscus. I've toyed with the idea of impatiens this year since the deck is so shady, but I still can't decide. The dilemma of my life...too many choices.

Reportedly it's going to be our nicest day so far in 2009, so I brought the bike this morning. I'm headed out around 2:30 to get started on my riding routine this year. Honestly, I'm a little bit excited about it. I love riding, it's good for me in so many ways, and as someone said recently, "A lot of old guys ride bikes."

If the shoe fits.

And speaking of organic:

Ben, we hardly know ye

I saw State of Play this weekend. The cast was incredible. Russell Crowe, Jeff Daniels, Helen Mirren, Jason Bateman, Ben Affleck, Robin Wright-Penn. The story was character driven, which is just my cup of tea. There was plenty of suspense and maneuvering by the characters so you were always trying to figure out what they were up to.

However, there were a few misses. The primary villain that we're directed to hate (willingly) is a corporation named Pointcorp who is really Halliburton in a thinly veiled disguise. They're making billions off of our most recent war by hiring mercenaries to send off to kill people, and though their actions are made pretty obvious there is no real discussion of the true villainy that is exemplified by the very existence of such corporations.

Another thing that I felt needed development was the mentor relationship Crowe had with Rachel McAdams character Della. She is a blogger, barely worthy of his reportorial disdain, and he takes her under his wing and she learn how to be a real reporter. He unfortunately doesn't see the handing down the mantle connection that is obvious to anyone over 40. Apparently he already knows enough and needs to learn nothing from younger people.

It was a non-movie star movie full of movie stars. It was actually pretty cool in that regard. I knew Afleck and Crowe and Mirren and all the rest were handing in their usual solid stuff, but there was no celebration of their presence.

On a more shallow note though I have to ask, "WHY DID BEN AFFLECK HAVE HIS FACE WORKED ON?" He looks like a corpse. It was embarrassing to see a man that handsome obviously succumb to ego and I would hope the bad advice of an agent or someone else who is a complete fool, because I'd hate to think he did that of his own accord.

Whatever he had done ruined his eyes. There was only one moment in which he looked like Ben Affleck. Early on he goes to Crowe's apartment and as he is taking his coat off he turns around and says something about the look of the apartment and we see this glimpse of the real Ben Affleck. Other than that he looks like a mannequin. Said to see someone fall from grace in such a clumsy way.

But the movie...Go see it. These are the kinds of projects almost no one does anymore and exactly the kind we need more of.

On a very different note we have another suicide of an 11 year old boy to report. This one was bullyed to death as well.

His 10 year old sister found him hanging in his room where he'd been sent to calm down after coming home in a bad mood from school. When asked what was wrong he refused to answer his mother and she sent him there. Only to find him a while later with his sister holding him up to release the pressure on his neck and screaming "Get Him Down!"

When do you suppose we're going to confront the issue of bullying? Those of us who carry those scars are reminded how bad and how isolating it can be. There has to be someone to help, it's imperative.

Where's the outrage?

I hardly know where to start. I’m having a very difficult time figuring out where is the outrage that should exist in this society.

Banks, whom we bailed out to the tune of several trillion dollars are posting a profit. Headlines everywhere these last few days say the worst may be over ( I personally doubt that) and yet the most popular barometer of our economies health, the Dow, fluctuates like my boyfriends ability to commit. One day it’s up, the next it falls precipitously.

And to top all this off, we, the working public get to take it …and take it…and take it.

I know people who have worked for organizations for 10-15 years who are unceremoniously escorted to the door.

I know people who they’ve worked with the entire time, unwilling to even talk to them en route, because that’s what they were instructed to do.

I know George Bush and Dick Cheney’s cries of “Be Afraid” didn’t go unheeded.

A lot of the people getting the ax are just short of retirement. Could this possibly be coincidence? I doubt that.

People who’ve worked their entire lives and are about to realize the fruits of their efforts, stopped short in their tracks and told, “Retirement? Um, no, not for you. The American Dream? Well, we think we’ll reserve it for ourselves thank you anyway. And good luck out there.”

They’ll need it. The older worker has the least chance of recovering from such a direct hit. They have no time!!! They’re on the cusp of retirement, they’re winding down their working years and they’re getting screwed without warning.

I cannot understand why they’re appearing to rollover instead of taking to the streets and demanding fair and equitable treatment.

Those cheap kids you’ve kept on the payroll Mr. Employer, could fare much better out there. They have time, they have youth, they have the resilience to survive.

What you’re doing is creating an unemployed, or underemployed, destitute lower class of senior workers who will be unable to maintain any semblance of their lifestyle in their later years. And in the end you’ve accomplished nothing. Your short-sightedness will have put you, the businessman, and major taxpayer, on the hook for all the food stamps, all the Medicaid and Medicare, and all the welfare that they’ll have to receive just to survive.

Those bullshit faith-based initiatives that Obama ill-advisedly continued will now be feeding and clothing the poor seniors you’ve created. And you’ll be paying for it anyway.

How, in taking away their dignity did you figure come out on top?

This is all the stuff revolutions are made of. And I truly hope they do take to the streets.

Shame on us.

HGF! and why why why

Always one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I have to wonder why everyone is jumping on the marriage bandwagon. I refuse to call it gay marriage, marriage is marriage, doesn't matter what you do that night.

It's a puzzle, but one for another day. Right now all I want is to look at men. Well, in truth all I want is to drink gin, smoke dope, and have sex with strangers. But I'll settle for a few pictures.

Is it Friday yet???

Oy! Could I use a martini tonight.

I'm trying to et everything done this morning so I can go spend this afternoon in a meeting which is utterly pointless, but which, unfortunately, I dragged myself into.

There's a thing I'm supposed to be the contact person on and I found out someone else was scheduling meetings about it and I didn't know what was going on so I made some noise about is and now I have to go. When will I learn.

On top of which indignity, I am teaching Macbeth tonight. Well, actually every thursday night until the middle of next month, again, when will I learn. So I'm boning up on my knowledge of that subject at the same time. Oh! and I had to take a test this morning for an online class I'm taking. It's due tonight by 11pm so there was no other time to do it. How I passed I'll never know.

I need a morsel:

Oh ! Look! Here's one now!

Taxes death and change

Happy Tax day all you loving gay couples out there!

I hope you're enjoying the final day of our 2009 tax season. I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you what you're getting for your bucks.

I will assume I'm average in the tax area, in that I paid $9500. in taxes this year. Yes almost ten grand went to Uncle Sam.

Let's see what I got for it.

1.) $4 a gallon gas for quite a while in 2008. Because we were being robbed by the very people we entrust our health and well being to, who deny us our civil rights at every turn.
2.) a war I never wanted that had nothing to do with anything but someone's daddy issues. A war I couldn't protest effectively because I have no civil rights.
3.) If my partner were to get sick and be hospitalized his family could STILL deny me visitation. Yes, the person with whom I share my life could lie in a bed and die without me being ALLOWED to be present, as though I were 12 and because I have no civil rights.
4.) I can't get married. Which in essence is true. Oh, I can go to Massachusets or Iowa, or Vermont and get hitched, but come tax season I'm still filing single. Becuse I have no civil rights.
5.) I pay taxes out my ass for schools I do not use. Yes I get money from education, but that's from WORKING FOR IT. I don't get any benefit at all for all the money that gets poured into schools from my pockets. And I can't protest this effectively beause I have no civil rights.
6.) I can be denied housing, health care, even my freedom if certain people could justify it. Because I have no civil rights.
7.) If my name were not on the deed to our home, when my partner who is in the hospital dying without me succumbs to whatever ailment he has, I can be summarily tossed out into the street by his family without any ANY of the articles we jointly owned. Our relationship means nothing, it can be denied once one of us is gone.
Because we have no civil rights.
8.) I have a job in education that could evaporate at any minute a. because we've been living in a fool's paradise for years and only now are beginning to realize that we don't actually have all the money they led us to believe we had. b. because if I were to be openly gay, not that I'm in the closet here, but it's just never talked about, but if I were to be openly gay and my new director who is a short little hispanic guy who obviously has little-man syndrome, and his counterpart who is from Oklahoma, didn't like that, they could toss me out on my ass and I would have no recourse. Because I have no civil rights.
9.) Someone, anyone, can beat me senseless on the street and leave me for dead, and likely the popular opinion would be, "Well, it was going to happen eventually. I mean you know how they are." and whoever beat me senseless could say that I tried to make advances on them and the popular opinion would be, "Well, he asked for it the stupid old queer." And nothing would be done. Because I have no civil rights.
10.) Were I a younger man and so inclined, I could enlist and serve in the Armed Forces of the United States. I could carry a gun, I could fight on the front lines. I could even die for my country if that were to come to pass. I could work in an area less fractious, I could serve in a capacity more fitting my delicate sensibilities should I find sympathetic superiors in whom I could confide. But out I'd go if they caught me making love to the very person to whom it's natural for me to love. No GI bill, no veterans benefits, in fact if I were dishonorably discharged I'd lose certain rights, for instance I could no longer own a gun. Because I suck dick?!?!?! Yes, because I suck dick. And also because I have no civil rights.

It would behoove us to remember these things every time we're told that our fight for civil rights is going to be put on the back burner because the President's plate is full. He still expects us to pay our taxes, he still expects us to give our lives for our country, but he's too busy to look into why we're treated as second class citizens every day in every way.

Because we have no civil rights.

Happy tax day.

Update: Please note that I've added two children to the list of hate crimes victims today. Hooray for free speech.

There is hope

Well, not really, but at least this morning made me think there was for a few minutes.

I drive a particularly heinous stretch of road every morning out of necessity, since it's the main street closest to my apt. If I time it right there are not dense crowds, this morning I didn't time it right. But, as I sat at the very first light, which means I went about 50 feet before stopping I glanced in my rear view mirror and I fell in love with a fat woman.

She looked to be around my age late 40's to early 50's, hair colored in one of those shades of red that do not occur in nature, a bit of a double chin, and wearing glasses that looked to be a throwback to the 70's. They were colored, like, reddish/amber. Then I realized what those glasses were designed to hide.

She was getting high! Now, as most of you know falling in love with a woman would take some doing for me, yet this dumpy little thing accomplished it with one toke.

I realized why she was shielding her mouth from the view of those on her left with one hand and what she was arising to her mouth with her right! And I thought no one got high to go to work anymore.

This revelation was hot on the heels of the revelation last night at the grocery store that the little cub who checks out my groceries is checking out more than my groceries. I felt like a dirty old man. Didn't stop me from loving it, he's quite adorable, albeit about 17, but I've got time. He even looked at my check longer than he should and asked me if the address and phone were correct. A bit forward, but I got the message. I hope he's not a stalker.

And that on top of the epiphany I had last night after class. I had kept in my possession several copies of the plays I've assigned as their final project, and after class I realized that I not only needed to take them back but I didn't feel comfortable keeping the envelope with my student evaluations in it. It's the time of year the students get to evaluate me, and though they were in my box with instructions to turn them in by May 1, I was not comfortable leaving campus with them so I went to my car and drove around to the library to return a book and make the walk to the dean's office shorter.

It's early spring and the trees are just getting that fuzzy green look of the buds coming, and though our campus was built in the 70's and a perfect example of brutalism in architecture there are still things of nature about. As i was walking to the other building I stopped and looked around for a minute and I had a bit of an epiphany. Though it may not be the most prestigious college campus in the area, it's still a college campus and I teach there! Cool huh?

Snuck out this morning to run to the college and had a great conversation with my dept. head about my classes and what I want the book to do for the fall. We NEEEEED a new one. I think we'r gonna get one too.

Well enough of the good news stuff, gotta work a bit:

Speaking of fuzzy...

Christians are a pain in my ass

With all that Easter stuff going on I completely forgot that Christians rule my world.

Thursday the housekeeper finally committed mutiny. She now refuses to use my 18 year old Kenmore upright vacuum cleaner. Apparently the last explosion which sent dust everywhere requiring her to re-dust the entire apartment was more than she could take. I have to admit the second dusting wasn't very energetic.

So Sunday morning I woke with the resolution that I would spend at least a little time looking for and buying a new vacuum. So with the Sunday circular in hand I set forth to be a good little American and spend.

Little did I remember that the damn Christians rule my world.

EVERYTHING WAS CLOSED!!!

WTF?!?!?!

I couldn't get groceries, I couldn't get drugs, (well, I could get drugs but not the kind I needed.) And I certainly couldn't get a vacuum cleaner.

I came home with a roll of paper towels and a bottle of aspirin.

Fucking Christianity.

Have a little princely morsel.

Ignorant Texas crap

THIS is the kind of ignorant Texas crap the whole world has had to tolerate these past 8 years.

ASIAN NAMES: Texas Republican Rep. Betty Brown suggests that Asians might want to change their names so they're easier for Americans to pronounce.-towleroad.com

UNFUCKINGBELIEVABLE.

I'm sure she'd recommend I trade my dick for a vagina so I wouldn't be gay anymore.

My cursing scores were going down on the thing in the sidebar. Had to do something.

Good Friday

It's VERY difficult for me to pass up a chance to Christian bash. Therefore, here on this holiest of holies I'd like to take the opportunity to ask a few questions.

When did Christianity become about hate? Was I just naive when I was a youngster? Did I simply not realize I was being taught to hate? Because I was. I was taught that "Jews", and "Niggers", and "Spicks", and "Slants" were all less than me, but of course we never mentioned fags cause they were a special breed beneath contempt, as it turns out. Little did they know. Was I supposed to deny who I am for the greater good? What possible purpose could that serve? Was I too not made in the image of whatever God you idolize?

I cannot and will not subscribe to any organization that pretends to love but really only hates. My "Family" included. The hypocrisy in organized religion is just too much for me.

I cannot and will not subscribe to any organization that purports to be headed by a diety that is all loving and all forgiving, yet casts out anyone it deems unworthy.

I cannot and will not subscribe to any organization that would cast out anyone at all. It's not their place, they pretend to BE God, not to worship all those ideals they spout.

It's as if they don't even understand the language they speak. It's as if they don't know what the words mean when they speak of loving one's brother, of peace on earth, of acceptance and forgiveness. When their actions only speak hate.

Every time I do something i.e move, add text to or mention my reference in the sidebar to Matthew Shepard I get an automatically generated hate mail from some group of nuts in Utah. These people profess to love God and revere what he teaches. How is that possible? And don't tell me I'm judging a book by its cover, what has been happening to me for over 50 years? From conception forward? No excuse that.

And as we all know actions speak louder than words.

So give me a fucking break already with your Christian hosanna's this weekend. Lighten up with the parades and the egg hunts.

Start practicing what you preach. After a few hundred years of that, we'll talk.

...and as if the Universe heard me, immediately after I posted this I opened MSNBC.COM to find the following:

"It's all about religious freedom for us."

Faith organizations and individuals who view homosexuality as sinful and refuse to provide services to gay people are losing a growing number of legal battles that they say are costing them their religious freedom.

The lawsuits have resulted from states and communities that have banned discrimination based on sexual orientation. Those laws have created a clash between the right to be free from discrimination and the right to freedom of religion, religious groups said, with faith losing. They point to what they say are ominous recent examples:

* A Christian photographer was forced by the New Mexico Civil Rights Commission to pay $6,637 in attorney's costs after she refused to photograph a gay couple's commitment ceremony.
* A psychologist in Georgia was fired after she declined for religious reasons to counsel a lesbian about her relationship.
* Christian fertility doctors in California who refused to artificially inseminate a lesbian patient were barred by the state Supreme Court from invoking their religious beliefs in refusing treatment.
* A Christian student group was not recognized at a University of California law school because it denies membership to anyone practicing sex outside of traditional marriage.

"It really is all about religious liberty for us," said Scott Hoffman, chief administrative officer of a New Jersey Methodist group, the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, which lost a property tax exemption after it declined to allow its beachside pavilion to be used for a same-sex union ceremony. "The protection to not be forced to do something that is against deeply held religious principles."

But gay groups and liberal legal scholars say they are prevailing because an individual's religious views about homosexuality cannot be used to violate gays' right to equal treatment under the law.

"We are not required to pay the price for other people's religious views about us," said Jennifer Pizer, director of the Marriage Project for Lambda Legal, a gay rights legal advocacy group.

Twelve states now offer some form of same-sex marriage or same-sex partner recognition. Twenty states -- including Maryland -- and more than 180 cities and counties, including the District, ban discrimination against gays, according to the Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights group. Virginia bans it against state employees.

These laws generally offer some type of exemption to religious entities when hiring employees. But some groups are working to expand that exemption to include commercial businesses to protect owners and their employees when exercising their religious views.

Gay rights groups said they do not object to making faith groups' religious jobs exempt from the discrimination laws but that offering services to the public is different.

"In their role as a participant in the marketplace, they are being required to do that in a non-discriminatory way," said Brian Moulton, Human Rights Campaign senior counsel.

Battles are increasingly including private businesses. Last August, the California Supreme Court ruled in favor of Guadalupe Benitez, who is a lesbian, when she sued the North Coast Women's Care Medical Group after doctors said their religious beliefs prevented them from artificially inseminating her.
"We were devastated," said Benitez, 37, who has been with partner Joanne Clark for almost two decades. Sexual orientation "should never have been an issue," she said. "The issue was that I had a medical condition."

The court ruled that North Coast Women's Care did not have a free-speech right or a religious exemption from the state antidiscrimination law.

Sometimes, organizations that don't wish to serve gays give in rather than go to court.
The online dating site eHarmony agreed to provide gay and lesbian matchmaking services to settle a complaint by a gay New Jersey man accusing it of discrimination. The new site, CompatiblePartners.net, started Tuesday.

The site eHarmony, founded by evangelical psychologist Neil Clark Warren, does not provide a same-sex option. Warren said his research into successful relationships did not include same-sex couples.

Company attorneys said that it settled because of the unpredictable nature of litigation and that New Jersey's attorney general did not find that eHarmony had violated the state's anti-discrimination law.

"People seem to say that if you enter the world of commerce, you lose all your First Amendment rights" to free exercise of religion, said Jordan Lorence, senior counsel at the Alliance Defense Fund, a Christian legal organization that has represented several businesses. "They . . . have become nothing more than vending machines, and the government can dictate the conditions under which they dispense their goods and services."

Even when groups opposing homosexuality have prevailed in court, they have gone on to face other setbacks. The Boy Scouts of America won a lawsuit in 2000 because it did not allow openly gay Scouts or Scout leaders. Since then, some private charities have refused to support the Scouts, and some local governments have yanked free use of facilities and other benefits. In Philadelphia, the city is demanding that the Scouts pay $200,000 in annual rent for a building that they had been using rent-free. The dispute is in court.

Some scholars also point to Bob Jones University, which lost its tax exemption over a ban on interracial dating and marriage among students, even though it claimed that those beliefs were religiously grounded. Some legal analysts suggest that religious groups that do not support gay rights might lose their tax exemptions because of their politically unpopular views.

Jonathan Turley, a law professor at George Washington University who supports same-sex marriage, said the Bob Jones ruling "puts us on a slippery slope that inevitably takes us to the point where we punish religious groups because of their religious views."

Both sides predict more litigation as gay rights bump up against strong religious beliefs.

Marc Stern, general counsel for American Jewish Congress, said: "When you have a change that is as dramatic as has happened in the last 10 to 15 years with regards to attitudes toward homosexuality, it's inevitable it's going to reverberate in dozens of places in the law that you're never going to be able to foresee."

Gotta preserve that right to hate. What tools. I cannot and will not subscribe to the notion that organizations that abuse their religious position and certainly their fervor to promote the elimination and certainly open hatred of me or anyone else, should be pitied because the people are finally rising up and saying...ENOUGH!

You cannot use your personally held views to pass judgement, to discriminate, to decide who lives and dies (that position is apparently reserved by health insurance companies)or to deny that I am just as worthy of life and liberty as anyone else.

And it's Hot Guy friday.

I just found some great pics of one of my all time favorites, Ivan Sergei. Even though he's one tall goomer I still love him.

Can't get out of our own way

This is a great little car. Could perhaps be a bit cheerier looking, but on my way to work, I can be grim as I want to be. The Volkswagen Ipo will be available in Shanghai in 2010 and will sell for...well perhaps you should sit down...

$600

We'd ALL have one, Volkswagen would be the American car company, gas issues would be solved since the thing gets 75 mpg,(my weekly commute is 80 miles) and of course the powers that be will NEVER allow us to have it. Cause they have to keep raping us on gasoline as long as the economy will allow and beyond.

This is a perfect example that we need to take this country back. In fact yet another sign of the apocalypse came along the other day. My rabid Republican brother, whom I love dearly, sent me an email that said the government should give everyone a million dollars with the stipulation that we'd all buy a house and a car.

I thought to my self, "You don't even understand the basic tenets of Socialism, cause if you did, you'd have a fit that that is exactly what you're proposing."

Amusing, no?

We have to take it back

I'd like to preface this post by saying that if you disagree with me regarding the absolute necessity that we take over health care and abolish health insurance companies then please stop reading now and go fuck yourself. That's going to be my response so it's best that you know it up front.

I cannot imagine what this would have been like if I were actually sick.

11 months ago my employer conducted their annual, which is ridiculous, enrollment in health insurance plans. As always I enrolled, and participated in the corporate hand job known as "The Wellness Assessment." This is a device in which they ask you several innocuous questions which, at some point I'm sure, they'd attempt to use said answers against you when applying for benefits if they could. During this assessment I remember clearly noting that this year, for reasons not explained, that we would NOT be assigned a confirmation number. I knew I was doomed.

Here we are at a point where I thought I might just make it scott free through the plan by my employer to rid me of the scourge that is my health care "denier" Humana, read hereafter "the rotten blood-sucking bastards" because we're switching to someone else who will likely be equally as bad, if not worse.

Last weekend I developed my annual spring sinus infection. I went to the dr. yesterday and subsequently to the pharmacy, where I was told I owe a $100 deductible.
I, of course, had a paroxysm of apoplexy in the middle of Walgreen's.

I will end up paying this $100 today in an effort to get rid of this infection. I am told this morning by my employer that they have to "research" the problem. Meaning, do absolutely nothing until I give up and fork over the C-Note.

I have decided that if I do indeed lose my job on July 1, I will then devote myself to the demolition of health insurance companies in this country and socializing medicine as it should be. (again, if you disagree with me, come blow me)

It is unconscionable that the richest most powerful nation on the earth should have a third world health care system. It is unconscionable that the likes of George W.Bush should be able to whistle merrily along his way, which of course, is what' he's done, after the feast he provided the carnivores that he called his base. It is unconscionable that we should continue to allow it.

But of course we do.

Update: I parted with the hundred bucks, and half an hour later got a call from the blood sucking bastards that they had discovered that my HR department had indeed not told them I'd completed the survey and that in the next couple of days they'd have it all worked out. This of course means that i will have to fight the reimbursement fight. During this whole debacle I dealt with 12 people. 12 people cause I got a code in by doze. Insane.

All for a runny nose.

Fuck.

Quick! A morsel for my mood:

How could you NOT love this?

IOWA IOU an apology

Well it appears I have to back off all those slurs I've made over the years about Iowa. Their Supreme Court unanimously voted for gay marriage! The resulting interest crashed the Supreme Courts servers.

Not California, but Iowa, how about that. I could marry E if I wanted. Of course I'd have to move to a state I don't want to live in to do it. Well, Vermont might not be so bad if they get smart and override their bigot of a governor. What's up with Republicans and denying civil rights? I do not get it.

Massachusets, Iowa, Connecticut, and New Jersey. The first four to recognize that marriage is marriage and heterosexual people don't own it.

...and Justice for all.

I thought it would never come

It's Hot Guy Friday. Truthfully I'd begun to wonder if Friday had been abolished and no one had the nerve to tell me.

Tonight it's martini's, maybe a little cuddling too, I need them both. Someone to pat me on the head and say, "It's over, you can relax for a few days."

Here's the world I want to live in:

But living in this one isn't all bad either:

Still gray

It's amazing that it can still be gray outside. I'm mystified. I'm certain the sun still exists even though I haven't seen it in a Loooooong time.

I was listening to a piece on NPR this morning about health insurance and how worthless it is. I have to wonder exactly when the people are going to stand up and make this stop. We're getting systematically screwed out of not only health care, but life. There are people who are no longer with us because a health insurance carrier denied them coverage and let them die.

Is this right? Is this ok with you? And please do not sit there and ask "well, what can I do?" cause I'll cuss you roundly, and then spit on you. Get on the ball, start now to acquire some rights about health care.

Not only is it an advantageous time, but these insurance companies need to be stopped. And we can stop them, but we have to start while we're healthy, while we don't need them and while we have the strength.

These are the things that socialism is borne out of. If people are so afraid of socialism ,and I have no idea why they would be, then it's time to set things straight or we'll have to socialize medicine, and we'll have to socialize the financial system, and then we'll lament the passing of our democracy, all because of greed.

And greed is what it's all about folks. They just want to take our money and give none back in the form of benefits they promised because we gave them the authority to decide whether we live or die. I'd suggest you help us get this worked out before you need them. Because it can happen to you. They will let you die and they will NOT think about it again.

How could you let these morsels not have necessary health care?

Stand up and be counted.

Spacey day

I took the wrong allergy meds today, so I'm more obtuse than usual...imagine.

I think I might just take the rest of the afternoon and stare at my apartment walls. They've got to be vastly more entertaining than staring at my co-workers who keep walking out of my office shaking their heads.

oh well

morsel-

Eastern European morsel, how's THAT for obtuse?
